The Fourth Annual Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race
A 5k Run/Walk for Women's Progress

The Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race celebrates Anthony's efforts to win women equal rights and opportunities, especially her fight to win women admission to the University of Rochester.

Special guest this year Cathy Turner, 2 Time Olympic Gold Medallist

Race Information

This 5k walk/run hopes to make Anthony's heroism real to women and men today. The course is flat and accurate, beginning at the Susan B. Anthony House, 17 Madison Street, and ending at the University of Rochester's Interfaith Chapel on Wilson Blvd. Parking and registration will be at the University of Rochester. Buses will transport walkers and runners to the Susan B. Anthony House for the start of the race. Proceeds from the race benefit ongoing educational programs at the Anthony Center for Women's Leadership and the Susan B. Anthony House.

The Route

From outside Susan B. Anthony's front porch at 17 Madison Street, to West Main Street (Route #33), to Ford Street, to the Ford Street Bridge, to Wilson Boulevard, to Faculty Road, to Fraternity Road, to Wilson Boulevard at the Interfaith Chapel.

Registration and Entry Fees

All participants will receive a canvas bag filled with promotional materials from our sponsors. Participants with $25 or more in pledges will receive a free Race T-shirt.

Registration by mail, online, or on-site.

Parking is available on the UR Campus in the Library and Intercampus Lots.

Shuttles will take runners and walkers from the registration area to the Susan B. Anthony House. The last shuttle will leave campus at 9:45 am.

Race Day registration from 8:45 am to 9:45 am at the University of Rochester, directly behind the Library, adjacent to the parking area. At the registration area, race packets will be distributed, including numbers and t-shirts.

Fun Run

"Round the Eastman Quadrangle" for children 12 and under will take place at 11:00 am on campus. All participants will be given a prize. The "run" will begin when Susan B. Anthony rings a bell and end with a special treat.

The History

In 1898, the forty-eight year old University admitted only male students. Anthony decided to take the fight on. She believed women would win equality only if they could learn and compete with men. University trustees would admit women only if Anthony and her fellow Rochester citizens could raise a $50,000 endowment by September 8, 1900.

Two days before the deadline, Anthony returned to Rochester from an extended suffrage campaign to find her committee was still $8,000 short of its goal. Still undaunted at 80 years old, Anthony raced through the City to raise the needed funds in time. She rushed to the Trustees' meeting and, when the men rejected the last $2,000 pledge, Anthony gave her life insurance to win women the right to equal education. Thanks to Susan B. Anthony's remarkable perseverance, women began to attend the University of Rochester 101 years ago this September.

FINISH LINE ACTIVITIES
A Special Honored Guest

Cathy Turner, a two-time Olympic Gold Medallist in short track speed skating (1992 and 1994) and a Silver and Bronze Medallist as anchor of the 3000m Relay Team, will join the Legacy Race. Cathy will participate in a book signing of "Awaken the Olympian Within" which she authored a chapter in and give an inspirational speech to help inspire others to believe their dreams can be realized at the finish line ceremonies.

She is one of only two people ever to win Gold Medals in consecutive Winter Olympic Games. With a total of four medals, she ranks third for the most medals ever won by a Winter Olympian. In the true Susan B. Anthony spirit, Cathy returned to speed skating nine years after retiring. She was determined to realize her dream of Olympic gold. Critics discounted her chances. None believed a 26- year old woman, away from her sport for nearly a decade, could build the strength and speed she would need to win a medal. Cathy proved them wrong. In 1992, Turner won both gold and silver medals at the Olympic Winter Games at Albertville, France. The whole world cheered her triumphant victory lap. Two years later, Cathy made a second comeback - winning gold and bronze medals at the 1994 Winter Games in Norway. Today, Cathy works to inspire others to realize their dreams.

Ceremony

Be sure to stay for our Finish Line Ceremony! Our Mistress of Ceremonies is Rebecca LeClair, veteran reporter and anchorwoman from WHEC Channel 10 News. Rebecca will award the prizes for various categories. We will also have a radio personality from WARM 101.3 take part in the ceremony.

Stop by the WARM 101.3 Van and Gazebo at registration and finish line to hear great music, get free promotional materials, and free samples of products. Enjoy a performance by Vocal Point, UR's renowned all female a capella singing group.

Enjoy refreshments from Monatanna Mills, Plunkett's Fabulous Foods, Wegmans and more!

Vendors

This year in order to support women-owned businesses we are holding a Vendor Expo at the race finish line. The following are confirmed Vendors. Check back as we get more responses each day.

Charming Sisters, Inc.

Owned by Alicia Novitsky, this Boutique and Day Spa is located on Main Street in Victor, NY. Alicia's booth will feature jewelry, charms and cosmetics.

Flower City Massage

Laura Leonard will offering massages for a nominal fee at the finish line.

Healthy Sister's Soup and Bean Works

Part of the Catholic Family Center, this program is a competency based work experience program for women who are in early recovery, living in poverty and having limited or no work experience. They will be selling soup and bean mixes.

Pampered Chef

Lalla Fitzpatrick, UR Class of 1997, will be taking orders for Pampered Chef items that we all know and love. Lalla sold over $6,000 worth of Pampered Chef products in her first four months and was recently featured in the July/August issue of Rochester Woman Magazine.

Voter Registration

Voter Registration materials will be on hand at the race finish line.
